Christina Aguilera

Name : Christina Marie Aguilera
Profession : Pop Singer
Date of Birth : December 18, 1980
Place of Birth : Staten Island, NY
Height : 5′2′
Weight : 102 lbs
Fan Mail : 244 Madison Avenue Suite 314
New York NY 10016
Biography
Christina Aguilera’s story is a Hollywood dream come true. The daughter of a father in the military and a violinist/pianist mother who toured Europe with the Youth Symphony Orchestra, this18-year-old has traveled the world, living for a time in Japan, Florida, Texas and New Jersey, before settling in Wexford, PA, a suburb of Pittsburgh.
‘I wanted to perform as long as I could remember’ says the blonde, blue eyed high school senior. Christina first began performing in school talent shows. As an eight-year-old she appeared on the nationally syndicated ‘Star Search’, at age ten she sang the National Anthem for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Penguins, and then, at age 12 landed a spot on the ‘New Mickey Mouse Club’ appearing on the Orlando-based show along with several other future stars, including Britney Spears, J.C. and Justin of ‘N Sync and the star of ‘Felicity’, Keri Russell.

After two years on the weekly Disney show, Christina traveled overseas to further hone her musical skills. She recorded a duet, ‘All I Wanna Do,’ with Japanese pop star Keizo Nakanishi, appeared in the video and toured in Japan. Later that year, the young show biz veteran almost caused a riot at the Golden Stag Festival in Transylvania, Romania when she waded into the crowd of 10,000 while performing her two song set on a bill which included Sheryl Crow and Diana Ross.

On her return to the States in early 1998, Christina was invited to audition to record, ‘Reflection,’ for the Disney animated film ‘Mulan.’ The studio’s search for a powerful voice with a wide vocal range quickly ended. They needed someone ‘who could hit a high ‘E’ above middle ‘C,’ according to Christina. At her manager’s request, Christina cut a one take demo on her boombox in her living room singing to a karaoke tape of Whitney Houston’s ‘I Wanna Run To You’. The demo was FedExed to Disney — they loved it — and within 48 hours, the young girl with the unique mature voice was in a Los Angeles studio recording ‘Reflection’. That very same week RCA Records signed her to a record contract. Mulan premiered in June, 1998 and ‘Reflection’ turned into a Top 15 A/C single, with Christina performing it live on ‘CBS This Morning’ and the ‘Donnie & Marie Show.’

The song’s theme — the struggle to establish your identity — was something I could really relate to as a teenage girl myself,’ says Christina. The song also related well to critics, garnering a Golden Globe Nomination for best original song in a motion picture.

On her debut album for RCA, Christina continues to define herself and showcase her special voice. From the sparkling upbeat dance-pop of the first single, ‘Genie In A Bottle,’ to the guitar driven, heartfelt fun of ‘What A Girl Wants’, to the soulful gospel strains of ‘So Emotional’ and the truly awe-inspiring ballad, ‘I Turn To You’, Christina’s powerful affecting voice intertwines the themes of finding your own identity with the uncertainties of growing up.

‘I was thrilled to work with so many great producers on this album’ gushes Christina. Recent hitmakers Carl Sturken & Evan Rogers [’N Sync, Boyzone, Brand New Heavies] contribute a pair of tracks — the pop-soul ‘Love For All Seasons’ and the rousing dance-floor smash ‘Love Will Find A Way.’ ‘Genie In A Bottle’ was produced by ex-System member David Frank and Steve Kipner. The uncomplicated, heartfelt ‘Blessed’ was penned and produced by Travon Potts [co-writer of Monica’s chart topping ‘Angel of Mine]. Christina is specially proud of her ballads, including the Matthew Wilder [’No Doubt’] produced ‘Reflection’ and the spine-tingling Diane Warren ballad ‘I Turn To You’, produced by Guy Roche [Brandy, Dru Hill, Aaliya, K-Ci & Jo Jo]. Her soaring uptempos and thrilling ballads serve as ample proof that Christina is not just a new kid on the block, but a prime candidate for the Voice of her generation. This debut album marks another huge step for Christina down the road of commercial and critical success. With numerous television appearances to her credit it is not surprising that Christina has recently been approached by a number of directors for roles in films going into production this summer. But, this blond beauty with dazzling blue eyes is going to wait a bit before pursuing more time in front of the camera. ‘Right now, I’m continuing to focus on my singing,’ says Christina, ‘I’ve been waiting for this moment my whole life.’

Christina Milian

Christina Milian

Name : Christina Milian
Birth Name : Christina Flores
Profession : actress, musician
Date of Birth : September 26, 1981
Place of Birth : Jersey City, New Jersey, USA
Biography
Christina Milian is a multi-talented phenomenon whose resume includes film, television, theater and music. With starring roles in feature films and her highly-anticipated debut album It?s About Time ready for release, Milian is poised to take the entertainment industry by storm.
You know her from the infectious single ?AM To PM?which hit the top position on Billboard?s Hot 100 Singles chart in 2001, yet that was just a taste of what this multi-faceted young woman is capable of. An accomplished singer, songwriter, dancer, TV personality and actress, Christina has become a star of international proportions. She?s gone platinum, written hits for a slew of international acts, hosted MTV?s ?Wannabes,?enjoyed two Top 5 hits on the UK charts, recorded a smash that was #1 on RadioDisney for 12 weeks, had roles in several feature films and brought her intoxicating pop/R&B grooves world wide.

Add to Christina?s amazing list of accomplishments this; her long-awaited Island release It?s About Time. Featuring production from some of the heaviest hitters in R&B including Warryn Campbell (Alicia Keys, Brandy), Corey Rooney (Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey), Polli Paul (Black Eyed Peas), Bryan Cox (Usher, Lil Bow Wow) and songs co-written by Christina, It?s About Time is a sizzling indication of who Christina is and where she?s at.

As Christina explains it, ?Obviously the title refers to the length of time that it took me to complete this and finally have an album available in the US. But the other meaning is that I?ve learned that everything in my career has to do with timing. Clearly I could have rushed to put an album out two years ago when I first had a hit single, but because I had to wait, it worked out for the best. Everything happened for a reason, and it?s made me who I am. Which means that this album is really a reflection of me.?

One listen to It?s About Time and it is clear that Christina is in a decidedly more mature space. ?I?m older now. When ?AM To PM?came out I was a teenager. Now I?m 22 and so songs on this album have a little more depth to them.?The depth is evident by the album?s R&B vibe and lyrics that have a bit more edge. You can feel the sexy point of view on cuts like the up-tempo ?Love.?Produced by Warryn Campbell and featuring label mate Joe Budden, ?Love?vibrates with a retro 80?s dance club feel.

Another track guaranteed to make you move is the rhythmic ?Peanut Butta and Jelly,?produced by KP and EZ Tommy. ?I love that song,?Christina offers. ?It?s got this real energized beat; it totally makes you wanna dance. It?s gonna be a great song for my live shows? Equally propulsive is the first single ?Dip It Low,?which came via new comer Polli Paul. Although Christina is one of the industry?s most in-demand songwriters (she co-wrote Jennifer Lopez?s hit ?Play?, sometimes she seeks out inspiration elsewhere. With her album nearly completed Christina knew that something was missing and as fate would have it a friend turned her on to a hot producer. ?When I met Polli and he played me ?Dip It Low?I just flipped. The song was crazy, so I just went right back into the studio to record it and everyone just loved it.?

Yet it?s not just on up-tempo jams where Christina shines. Listen to the lovelorn ballad ?Someday Oneday,?produced by Corey Rooney or the emotional ?Oh Daddy,?and you will hear an introspection that can only come with growth.?I?ve been through a lot these past few years, both good and bad, so it?s natural that my songs are going to reflect my thoughts.?

Born to Cuban native parents in New Jersey and raised in Maryland, Christina has had her eyes on the prize since she was only four years old. ?I remember as a kid watching TV and I?d try to get inside of the television. That?s how much I wanted to be a star!?

While still young, Christina landed a role in a musical theater play and later parlayed that into a recurring part on the Disney Channel?s ?Movie Surfers.?At 13 Christina and her mom (who she cites as a major support) moved to Los Angeles so that Christina could pursue acting. Christina landed guest spots on TV shows such like ?Charmed?and ?Sister Sister?and provided voice over work for the #1 film A Bug?s Life.

In 2000 Christina gained worldwide fame when her girlish vocals were showcased on Ja Rule?s #1 hit ?Between Me and You? Soon everyone was wondering who was that girl singing the hook and Christina?s star began to rise.

Propelled by the overwhelming success of the Bloodshy produced ?AM To PM?Christina started recording the collection that was slated to be her debut. Suddenly, Christina was a huge star in places she?d only dreamed of and her music was loved by fans that didn?t speak English. ?I?d grown up watching people like Michael and Janet Jackson. People who were universal superstars, so for me, being able to conquer different territories was a very big deal. The whole experience made me more confident and proud that I could reach so many people. Sure it was hard not having an album available back home but in the end it all worked out for the best. I had the chance to tour (she hit 17 countries between 2001-2002) and work on my songwriting. So everything happens for a reason and I know I?m blessed.?

The blessings also manifested itself when it came to Christina’s acting career. In 2002 Christina was tapped to host MTV?s widely popular ?Wannabes?and it was on an episode that she met director Joseph Kahn. Kahn asked her to audition for the feature film Torque opposite Ice Cube. She secured the part, which subsequently landed her the coveted lead role opposite Nick Cannon in the box office smash Love Don?t Cost a Thing. Christina?s star continues to rise on the silver screen with a lead role in Cheer Up opposite Tommy Lee Jones, as well as a choice part in Be Cool (the follow-up to Get Shorty), alongside John Travolta, Uma Thurman and others.

With a thriving film career, Milian continues to be passionate about making music. ?Singing and acting are both my passions and they go hand in hand.?

She might have undergone a circuitous route, but it seems that in 2004 Christina Milian is ready to stand in the spotlight and go for hers. As her album title would indicate, in the end it?s often about timing and with Christina Milian, that time is now.

Biography
Destiny’s Child is an all-female R&B vocal quartet from Houston comprising Beyonce, Kelly, LaTavia and LeToya. The group was formed in 1990 by Music World Management’s Mathew Knowles, who recruited LaTavia, Beyonce, and two other girls — then only seven and eight years old — to be in an R&B group; Kelly joined in 1992, shortly before the then pre-pubescent quartet appeared on ‘Star Search,’ where they rapped instead of sang.
In 1993 LeToya rounded out the current lineup, which scored a breakthrough hit in 1996 with the single ‘No No No,’ also found on their 1997 self-titled debut album. Destiny’s Child features production by big names such as Wyclef Jean, Pras, Sylvia Bennett Smith, Jermaine Dupri, as well as a number of covers of classic R&B songs.

Dido

Dido

Name : Dido
Birth Name : Dido Florian Cloud De Bounevialle Armstrong
Profession : Singer
Date of Birth : December 25, 1971
Place of Birth : London, UK
Height : 5′ 8′
Biography
Dido was 5 years old when she stole her first recorder. This didn’t lead to prison, but rather to her entrance one year later to the Guildhall School Of Music in London. A bit of a child prodigy, by the time she was 10 she played piano, violin, and the aforementioned recorder. Her teenage years were an interesting mixture of stealing her brother’s record collection (from the clash to Gregory Isaacs to Duran Duran) and touring the U.K. with her classical music ensemble. And then, at 16, she finally fell in love with Ella Fitzgerald.
So began a passion that eventually led Dido from listener to participator: she started singing with various bands in and around London, and despite the fact that her brother, Rollo, told her not to give up her day job, she eventually appeared on the debut album of a band that Rollo formed in 1995. This band was Faithless, and they went on to sell five million records. Over the next two years, Dido toured with Faithless (a very different experience from her classical days) and, whenever she was back in London, also recorded demos of her own songs. On Faithless’s current release, Sunday 8 p.m., Dido appears on two songs–one of which incorporates her own ‘My Lover’s Gone.’

Arista Records heard these demos at the beginning of 1997, and Dido was invited to the Dorchester Hotel in London to meet Clive Davis. The meeting was successful (Clive even helped out with some of the backing vocals, as Dido sang to him).

So began the recording of Dido’s debut album, No Angel. The album was produced by Dido, her brother Rollo (obviously now deciding she should give up her day job), Rick Nowels, and Youth, and what a beautiful album it is. Unified by both Dido’s stunning voice and lyrical acuteness, the album travels through various and diverse styles, ranging from the impassioned magnificence of ‘Here With Me,’ the gentle soulfulness of ‘Thank You’ (featured in the recent Gwyneth Paltrow movie Sliding Doors), the deep dubbiness of ‘Honestly OK,’ to the lyrical perversity of ‘Don’t Think Of Me.’ Combining Dido’s love for warm acoustic sounds and her brother’s fascination for beats and all things electronic, the album is both new and classic at the same time. Above all, it is the quality of the songs that will make this album both durable and successful.

Dixie Chicks

Dixie Chicks

Band Name : Dixie Chicks
Members : Laura Lynch, Robin Macy, Natalie Maines,
Emily Robison, Martie Seidel
Founded in : 1989
Homecity : Dallas
Genre : Country, Pop Music Band
Biography

The band is composed of Natalie Maines (lead vocals), Martie Maguire (fiddle, mandolin, vocals), and Emily Robison (dobro, banjo, guitar, vocals). Their story began in Dallas, Texas where Martie Erwin and her younger sister Emily grew up in a household filled with melody. Guided by their mother, a private-school teacher, these two sisters practiced and became proficient on a variety of stringed instruments while remaining in elementary school.
The two sisters formed the Blue Night Express, a teen bleuegrass band in 1984, and this was a mere beginning of their showbiz career. Their instrumental skill and vocal harmony enlightened Texas for five years before Martie and Emily, then 19 and 16 respectively, opted to disband from the troupe.

The name Dixie Chicks (a name borrowed from a song by the blues-rock band Little Feat) was christened only a few months after the Blue Night Express dissolved when the two sisters joined up with two friends to perform sidewalk performances in Dallas’ business district.

Even though The Dixie Chicks decided to adopt big hair and a Dale Evans-style dress code, these cowgirls remain respected by their peers. The combination of good looks and pure musical talent gave way to stints like opening up for Garth Brooks, George Jones, and Emmylou Harris. In 1993, the impressive quartet performed at both the Grand Ole Opry and at President Clinton’s Inaugural Ball.

Despite a strong following in the Dallas region, the Dixie Chicks released a trio of well-received independently produced albums. In 1992, the band experienced internal problems, and one of the band’s two main singers left the group. In 1995, a second singer left the group.

By sheer luck, renowned steel guitar player Lloyd Maines had slipped a demo tape of his daughter singing to the bands’ recording producer of independent releases. Like the Erwin sisters, Natalie Maines was brought up in the music world from childhood. She attended the prestigious Berklee College of Music on a full scholarship that she earned with her vocal skills. In 1995, Maines successfully became the lead vocalist for the Dixie Chicks.

The group released their mainstream sound in 1998. Wide Open Spaces was an instant sensation, and %22I Can Love You Better%22 became the group’s first Top 10 single. The album went quadruple-platinum within a year of its release. From then on, the Dixie Chicks appeared on all the major television talk shows and their album became the best-selling ever by a country music group.

Their success was honored with a host of awards: Grammys for Best Country Album and Best Country Vocal Performance by a Group; Academy of Country Music Awards for Album of the Year, Top Vocal Group, and Top New Vocal Group; and an American Music Award for favorite New Country Artist. On top of that, the Country Music Association presented the Dixie Chicks with a Horizon Award, and the band was also named Vocal Group of The Year as well. More recently, the CMA nominated the group for Entertainer of the Year.

Their success continued when they were included in the 20th Lilith Fair, and their single %22Ready To Run%22 appeared on the soundtrack of the film Runaway Bride. Fly soared to the No. 1 spot on the Billboard charts after selling almost 350,000 copies. Only Garth Brooks surpassed them for the highest sales in the first week.

In 2002, the Dixie Chicks enjoyed the fruits of pop success, with the release of their album, Home. Just when they were hitting the top of the music charts with singles like %22Landslide%22 and %22Travelin’ Soldier,%22 lead singer Natalie Maines proved that she does not support President Bush’s decision to invade Iraq when she spoke at a British performance in March 2003. After boycotts, public backlash and apologies by the Dixie Chicks, their future success is questionable.

Eminem

Eminem

Name : Eminem
Birth Name : Marshall Bruce Mathers III
Profession : rapper
Date of Birth : October 17, 1973
Place of Birth : Kansas City, Missouri, USA
Biography
Eminem’s father left him when he was only 6 months old. Marshall’s mother, Debbie was suspected of suffering from Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy (mental disease where a parent visions their child sick and forces them to undergo unecessarry medical treatment). Marshall was often left with his relatives. He then becomes very close with his uncle, Ronnie, who was pratically the same age as him. They were best friends, and spent all of their time together. Eminem - ‘Ronnie was the only real family member I had, that I was close to.’ At five, Marshall and Debbie move to East Detroit, Michigan. He is beaten up constantly by neighborhood bullies walking in the streets, and also as much in school. On winter recess, Marshall’s biggest bully, D’Angelo Baily, beats Marshall so severely he fell into a coma for ten days. After that incident in 1984, Marshall and Debbie moved back to Kansas City. He got back together with Ronnie. Ronnie was a rap music fan and ‘beat boxes’ for Marshall and makes him rap tapes. In 1987, Debbie and Marshall move back to Detroit. Even though Marshall didn’t have Ronnie around, he started rapping because he liked to do it, and that was all he had. He would never rap front of Ronnie because he thought he sucked it. At 13, Marshall started writing his own lyrics and recording his own raps. He then takes his initials which makes a name that he uses for himself - M&M. Not long after this name change does he make it unique, by changing it to Eminem. He starts hustling money at school by battle rapping. He then attends Lincoln High School for the years 1986-1989. There he meets his high school sweatheart and future wife, Kim Scott. He also forms his first rap group, Bassmint Productions. He fails 9th grade three times. At 17, he drops out of school. He then starts performing on open mic nights for a local radio station. He is told that he is ‘pretty good’ for a white guy. This is when Marshall knew that he wanted to make rapping a career. In the summer of 1992, Ronnie visits Marshall in Detroit. Eminem then tells Ronnie about all his dreams to be a huge rap star. Ronnie tells Eminem that he has given up rap for good. He tells him that he won’t make it, and that it is only a fantasy. Eminem still didn’t want to give up. In 1992, Eminem begins rapping at the biggest hip hop club in Detroit, Saint Andrews. The first time he got onto the stage, he was booed off. Eminem didn’t let that bother him, and returned every week to enter rap compotitions. Eminem was soon invited to rap on the biggest hip hop radio station in Detroit, WHYT. On Dec. 13, 1993, Debbie called Marshal at a friend’s house, and was crying. She told Marshall that Ronnie is dead, and that he had committed suicide. Marshall then falls into a deep depression. He then quits writing lyrics and rapping. He stays in his room for hours listening to Ronnie’s rap tapes, and starts feeling that it was his fault that Ronnie commited suicide. (Eminem now has a tattoo on his left upper part of the arm which says, Ronnie RIP) In March of ‘95, Kim tells Marshall that she is pregnant. On March 25, 1995, Hailie Jade is born. Haile was a wake up call for Em, and that he must rap. Soon after creating a name for himself in the underground rap circuit, a small production company wants him to record an album. In the fall of 1996, he releases his debut album, ‘Infinite.’ Infinite made no money along with getting zero air play or radio time. Soon after this, Marshall, Kim, and Hailie Jade are evicted from their apartment. Kim then leaves Marshall and takes Haile Jade with her. They move in with her parents, and Eminem is not welcome there at all. Kim’s parents think of Marshall as a total loser with no future whatsoever, and Marshall is not allowed to see his daughter at all. In December of 1996, he suffers from an overdose, but luckily survives. January 1997, Slim Shady is born. He says that Slim Shady is his alter ego. Slim Shady is his very own darker side. After 10 months of performing at underground clubs, he is invited to the biggest hiphop event in the country. On October 24, 1997, he is invited to The 1997 Rap Olympics in Los Angeles. Battling for first place and after 6 rounds he loses to Juice. He comes in second place. Even though he didn’t win, he was noticed by Dr. Dre. Dre immediately took to liking Eminem and signs him to his label, Aftermath Records. Within a week, Eminem gets to work on his new album. On Feb. 23, 1999, The Slim Shady LP released. The album debuts at number 2 on the Billboard charts. He wins Grammy Awards for it and also the MTV awards: Best New Artist, Best Solo Hip Hop Act, and Best Rap Performance. This album goes multi-platinum. In September of 1999, Interscope Records gives Eminem his own record label… Shady Records. Eminem and Kim get remarried, and buys a large home for all of them. In April of 1999, Rolling Stone does a front page article on him where he talks about his childhood. Soon he is in lawsuit with his mother for 10 million dollars for the charge of defamation of character. Debbie states that his childhood was not bad at all. The lawsuit is still pending. In November of 1999, Eminem returns to the studios to start his newest album which was released on May 23, 2000, The Marshall Mathers LP.

Faith Hill

Faith Hill

Name : Faith Hill
Birth Name : Audrey Faith Perry Hill
Profession : Singer
Date of Birth : September 21, 1967
Place of Birth : Jackson, Mississipii
Fan Mail : P.O. Box 24266
Nashville, TN 37202
USA
Biography
Faith Hill first performed the National Anthem at a Mississippi tobacco-spitting contest. Years and many accomplishments later, as one of America’s top country music recording artists, Faith sang the Anthem at Superbowl 2000 before a television audience of 100 million viewers. It has been a long ride for the talented Mississippi performer. Faith was born on September 21, 1967 in Jackson, Mississippi. She was given the name Audrey Faith by her adoptive parents, Ted and Edna Perry, who raised her from the age of one week. Growing up in the tiny town of Star, Mississippi, Faith discovered music at a young age. Her early musical influences were Elvis Presley, Tammy Wynette, George Strait and Reba McIntyre, as well as the gospel choir of her church. During high school, Faith excelled in cheerleading, drama and sports, but singing remained her first love. She joined a band while still in high school and performed at rodeos, county fairs and even the Raleigh, Mississippi Tobacco Spit. Faith attended Hinds Community College, but dropped out after one semester in order to pursue her dream of becoming a singer. She moved to Nashville for this purpose, but had difficulty getting a steady job, as many companies refused to hire aspiring singers. Finally, Faith landed a job as a receptionist for singer Gary Morris by pretending to be a college student. One day, while singing along with the radio, Faith’s ruse was discovered. Rather than firing her, Morris was so impressed that he encouraged Faith to pursue her singing career. In 1988, at the age of 20, Faith married Daniel Hill, an employee at a music publishing company. During this period, she spent a lot of time frequenting Nashville clubs, and eventually she met songwriter Gary Burr. Burr hired Faith as his backup singer. Soon after, while singing at a local cafe, Faith was spotted by a record executive named Martha Sharp. In 1992, Faith was signed to Warner Brothers Records. In the following year, Faith’s life began to change dramatically. On the personal front, she located and met her biological mother, and divorced her husband. Faith made her professional debut at the Grand Ole Opry and released her debut album ‘Take Me as I Am.’ Her first single, ‘Wild One, ‘ hit number one and remained there for four weeks ^?the biggest debut single for a female artist in over thirty years. Just four months after her first hit song, Faith was named Best New Female Vocalist by the Academy of Country Music. In January 1995, Faith released her second album, ‘It Matters to Me.’ The album sold three million copies, and the title track became her fourth number one hit. Two months later, Faith began the ‘Spontaneous Combustion’ tour, which paired her with another up-and-coming country music star, Tim McGraw. During the tour Faith and Tim fell deeply in love, and in 1996 they were secretly married in Tim’s hometown of Rayville, Louisiana. In 1997, Faith gave birth to Gracie Katherine McGraw. Faith’s second daughter, Maggie Elizabeth, followed in 1998. Meanwhile, the songstress’s self-titled album, ‘Faith, ‘ sold four million copies worldwide. The album featured her hit single ‘This Kiss, ‘ which topped the charts for three straight weeks and became her first crossover success, hitting number five on the pop charts. The album also featured ‘Let Me Go, ‘ for which Faith received a Grammy nomination in the category of Best Female Country Vocal. The following year, Faith undertook her first cross-country headlining tour. The tour gave Faith the opportunity to promote The Faith Hill Family Literacy Project. Inspired by her father’s lifelong struggle with illiteracy, Faith had established this organization in 1996. During the tour, fans donated over 25,000 books, which were distributed to local schools, libraries and hospitals. In 1999, Faith Hill released her fourth album, ‘Breathe.’

Fiona Apple

Fiona Apple

Name : Fiona Apple
Birth Name : Fiona Apple Maggart
Profession : Singer, Songwriter
Date of Birth : September 17, 1977
Place of Birth : New York
Biography
Fiona Apple Maggart was born September 13, 1977, in New York City, and is the offspring of actors Brandon Maggart and Diane McAfee. Fiona and her older sister Amber had to endure the divorce of their parents, who split up when Fiona was four years old. The Maggart daughters have more stepsiblings, which their parents had from previous relationships.
Raised by her mother in New York, Fiona began taking piano lessons at the age of eight. Preferring to improvise (something that would explain Fiona’s off-beat statements), a musically inclined Fiona dropped her lessons and taught herself the keyboard.

Fiona’s sometimes disturbing image manifested itself at an early age, when an 11-year old Fiona confessed to a friend that she was going to kill herself and her sister. This prompted several therapy sessions which ultimately led her to believe that must actually be something wrong with her if she required therapy.

Anyone would require therapy after what happened to Fiona next. She was raped when she was 12 years old, in a New York apartment building. She subtly shares her experience with the public in the song ‘Sullen Girl’, but has candidly broached the topic of the tragic incident in interviews. Seeing the cup half full, Fiona admits that the experience has actually helped her find her artistic self.

On a brighter note, she was discovered after Fiona’s friend gave a demo tape of hers to Kathryn Schenker, a music-industry publicist the friend had babysat for. The world is small indeed, as Schenker’s list of clients includes Aerosmith and Sting. Schenker was impressed with Fiona’s music and style, and introduced her to Andrew Slater, a producer-artist manager. Fiona was signed to WORK, Sony’s affiliate label and the rest is history.

Her debut album, Tidal was released in 1995 and made a splash in the music industry. The album spawned hit singles such as ‘Shadowboxer’, ‘Sleep to Dream’ and ‘Criminal’, and fans really took to her piano-rich, introspective, edgy sound.

If people had not yet heard Fiona’s music, they were sure to hear about her after her acceptance speech for winning the Best New Artist award at the 1997 MTV Video Awards. There she was, a waify ‘bad girl’, clad in fashionable clothes and shoes, pleading with fans not to follow the images projected to them in the media and to be their own person. Ironic, coming from a girl who looks like the product of the industry she was blasting.

Although her ‘go with yourself’ speech practically became her claim to fame, it did not overshadow her success as she had won nominations for Best New Artist, Best Female Rock Vocal Performance and Best Rock Song (both for ‘Criminal’).

Already having a multi-platinum album under her belt — thanks to the success of Tidal — she released her sophomore album, When the Pawn….

Contrary to the dark, sad, woman portrayed in the media, Fiona is smiling on the cover of When the Pawn….

Fiona’s romantic history includes magician David Blaine and Magnolia director and screenwriter, Paul Thomas Anderson (who directed Fiona’s video for Criminal).
